Lawrence Business College

The bank building had a seperate entrance for Lawrence Business College.

Rows of typewritters are ready to be used so that students may gain the skills of  shorthand and how to type without looking at the keys.

Like many colleges, Lawrence Business College had a basketball team.

The college outgrew the bank building and moved to a house at 645 Louisiana.

As a way to entice interest, Lawrence Business sent out postcards to Lawrence residents. This postcard is an order form for a course catalog.  

Edmund Weatherby was the superintendent of Lawrence Business College for over 20 years. He is pictured here on his front porch at 1017 Indiana Street. Weatherby's brother Samual was a teacher at the school.

Established in 1869 by W.H. McCauley, Lawrence Business College (LBC) was the first business college in Kansas. The school was located in the Lawrence National Bank building on the third and fourth floors. The large enrollment numbers that grew each year forced LBC to move to 645 Louisiana. Between 1900 and 1920 newspapers like the Lawrence Daily Journal World and The Topeka Daily Capital had an entire page dedicated to the benefits of attending LBC. The college taught young men and women the tools needed to successfully enter into the business world. The biggest advertisement was for the typing classes the school provided. LBC no longer exists, but there is a lack of information as to when and why the college shut down.
