The Kansas River, nicknamed “The Kaw,” has had a large role in Lawrence’s history. Bowersock Mills has used The Kaw to fuel Lawrence’s progression through the use of hydropower. However, for as much as the Kaw has provided for Lawrence, it has also been a destructive force. Floods have plagued the city, some causing far more damage than others. Whether good or bad, the Kaw is a staple.
