Description
Richard “Dick” Schiefelbusch served in the United States Army (Air Corps) from 1941 to 1946. Interviewed by Pattie Johnston on June 28, 2007, Schiefelbusch talked about his experiences during the Second World War. Schiefelbusch was born in Kansas on July 23, 1918. He graduated high school in 1936 and attended Pittsburg State Teachers College. He enlisted in the Army the week after the attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941. He trained as a B-24 navigator. In 1943, Germans shot down his plane over the Kiel submarine base and took him to Stalag Luft III, a prison camp. He was rescued on April 29, 1945, and discharged in 1946. After the war, Schiefelbusch received a Ph.D. from Northwestern University. He is the first G.I. to get a Phd. He then established the Schiefelbusch Speech-Language-Hearing clinic at the University of Kansas.
