Description

Orvel Criqui served in the United States Navy from 1944 to 1946. Interviewed by Pattie Johnston on August 23, 2007, Criqui talked about his experiences during the Second World War. Criqui was born on May 28, 1924, in Melvern, Kansas. He graduated high school in 1942 and became a teacher. He then volunteered for the Navy Air Corps. He took training classes at Cornell College in Mount Vernon, Iowa, and then went to New Mexico for flight training. While there, he became ill and was sent to a hospital in San Diego. He could no longer be in the flight program, so he went to boot camp. He was then diagnosed with pneumonia and scarlet fever. Criqui was medically discharged in 1946. Upon returning home, he attended Emporia State University and resumed teaching. Criqui passed away on November 12, 2008.
