Description

Ellis Ralph Hayden served in the United States Navy from 1942 to 1945. Interviewed by Pattie Johnston on June 21, 2007, Hayden talked about his experiences during the Second World War. Hayden was born on February 4, 1924, in Ottawa, Kansas. He graduated from Liberty Memorial High School in 1942 and joined the Navy. Hayden went to basic training in Farragut, Idaho. He then attended machinist's mate school at the University of Kansas. Once assigned to a ship, the USS Kailua, he became a baker. He served throughout the South Pacific. After he was discharged, he returned to Lawrence, Kansas. Hayden passed away on May 29, 2019.
